Name of state

Assam

General information

Assam is a North Eastern Indian state based in the Eastern Himalayan foothills. The state’s capital is Dispur. In the past, Assam was known by various names like Pragjyotishpura and Kamarupa. After the decline of Kamarupa, the state was ruled by Shan people who were called as Asam or sometimes as Acam. They eventually renamed the name of the place as Assam. The state is T-Shaped and experiences heavy rainfall between March-September. The temperature is generally low during all the seasons. Due to the heavy rainfall, Assam is rich in vegetation, thick forests and wildlife. The state produces a lot of bamboos and is also an international distributor of tea. Assam is the only region in the world that grows a variety of tea. The state is also known for production of crude oil and natural gas.
