India is a great country and totally different from any other nation in the world. It is the world's second most populous country teaming with over one billion people. India is the seventh largest country in the world in areas. The total area covered by the country is equal to one third the area of the United States. New Delhi is the capital of the country. The name of the country is derived from the Old Persian name for the river Indus. India is a developing country with China on the North-East, Pakistan on the West, Burma and Bangladesh on the East and Nepal and Bhutan on the North. It was a British colony for more than a century since 1858 until independence was declared on August 15th 1947 as a result of the non-violence movement organized by Mahatma Gandhi. As a sign of development, India has ventured into many fields of development with numerous achievements in science and technology.
